  1. I love your videos, I'm an experienced baker myself but still enjoy watching. I wonder if it would be possible to factor in the aprroximate fuel costs? I combine bakes requiring the same temperature to reduce usage.

  2. Picky picky picky – can't believe there were complaints about the egg wash cost! Trolls – some people need to get a life! Oh, and I do EXACTLY the same with leftover egg wash rather than wasting it. I'm in Australia so the prices are very different here but I still really appreciate the economy of your recipes. These pies look great and I will gird my loins and aim to conquer the feared pastry after seeing how easy it is from your great instructions. QUESTION – if you wanted to freeze them should you bake them first. I'm guessing YES. Cheers from Oz!

  3. I guess the nearest comparison would be hollands pies….they cost £4 for 4….
I wouldn't call them deep filled (the hollands pies) and the electricity would cost the same as you have to cook those too.

  4. I actually like watching these videos. The videos are very informative. As a chef myself your videos are good for beginning people or even beginner chefs. Back to the basics it's good to see this. I watched all your videos just this morning.

  5. Hi Dave, I ❤ your videos and content. Thanks for taking the time to work out the cost of the individual ingredients; it just goes to show how cheap some basic/store cupboard staples are. Good call on the celery – it does add a beautiful savoury note. Plus, when you make things yourself you know exactly what’s in it. I also thought if you had more than three people to feed you could make one (larger) pie and serve it up with cheapest vegetables you can get hold off. With regard to calculating the cost of baking, that is tricky, given different fuels and tariffs. I personally know using my oven to bake costs more than using the hob/stovetop. My request to you would be for something you can cook/bake on the hob – maybe using a griddle or frying pan – maybe Welsh cakes, drop scones (probably going a bit old-school here). Thanks again.

  6. You are an absolute legend. I was watching this with my Mrs and I said I’m going to tell him no egg and then the egg. So I said as I continued to watch what about the rest of the egg. You got all scenarios covered. Thanks for your sense of humour and acknowledging mine. I subscribed my old mate you have a lovely days.

  7. I think you do an amazing job just pricing the basics. It helps a lot. The recipes are awesome too – good wholesome home cooking. I don't think pricing in the baking is necessary. Like you said it's too complicated. I think what you're doing already is a massive help – people know they can cook good wholesome food and it won't cost the earth to do so.

  8. The pie looks delishhhhh David, that with some mashed potato marbled with brown fruity sauce and it's a meal fit for a KIng!
Single people should get together and make good wholesome dinners like this, sharing the cost, and it's much better than all the gunk in supermarket pies.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge David much appreciated xx Jean from Scotland.

  9. I hope this is not a daft question, but about the lard for pastry making, I don’t eat pork. Would it work alright with all butter? I realise that’s a bit more expensive. This looks a great recipe, and as you mentioned, there are lots of variations one could add, to suit individual tastes. 👍
