How To Protect Stainless Steel BBQ Grill From Rusting

Monument Grills BBQ used in this video:
Weiman Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish –
Noxon 7 Metal Polish –

– The two products we’ll be using to protect our new stainless steel BBQ is Noxon7 and Weiman’s Stainless Steel cleaner and polish.

But before we jump into that we want to quickly review the facts about stainless steel and rust:
– One thing to highlight here is that not all stainless steels are made equally. What do I mean? Stainless steels comprise of a large variety of steel alloys that are made of different metal compositions. While some have more CHROMIUM, some might have more IRON in them. That’s why you’ll find that some types of stainless steels are magnetic, while others are not.
– To demonstrate, you can see here that this strong magnet easily sticks to our new stainless steel Monument Grills bbq, but when testing the stainless steel on this Traeger pellet smoker, it’s not magnetic whatsoever.
– Now, the largest single component of stainless steel, is STEEL, and steel will RUST. However, the chromium in stainless steel when exposed to oxygen in the air forms a thin invisible layer called chromium oxide which gives stainless steel its ability to resist stains and rust. Pretty cool right?
– So how can stainless steel rust? Well, less chromium makes it more susceptible to rust, so if you notice that your stainless steel appliance is magnetic, then you should consider cleaning and protecting it more frequently. Also, if that chromium oxide layer is damaged, then rust can form. The good news is, with a little cleaning and care that protective layer is self-healing.
– You can avoid damaging the chromium oxide layer by staying far away from cleaners that contain chlorides, alcohol, and ammonia. And NEVER use steel wool or steel brushes as small particles of these carbon steel materials may contaminate and adhere to the stainless steel which will begin the oxidation and rusting process.
– Instead, use a mild detergent such as dish soap and warm water, rinsing with fresh water and a clean cloth, completely drying the surface afterwards. Another alternative is to clean with a recommended stainless steel cleaner such Noxon7 or the Weiman’s cleaner and polish that I’m about to show you.

– Alright, either of these two products can be used independently, but others like myself have found that Noxon7 does a little better job cleaning while Weiman does a little better job polishing. So, we’ll show you how to use them both.
– We’ll start with the Noxon7 which you can purchase on Amazon for a little over $12 and it does a great job at cleaning a variety of metals, especially stainless steel.
– First grab a clean microfiber cloth to avoid scratching the surface of your grill. You don’t need to apply a lot of the Noxon7 as it goes pretty far.
– Be sure the direction your wiping the cloth goes with the grain of the stainless steel to avoid any swirl marks over time.
– Continue applying and wiping with the grain until the entire grill has been cleaned. Even a new grill can come from the factory with oils and debris on the surface from the manufacturing process, so be sure to clean it thoroughly.
– You should always wipe down your grill after use and store it with a cover, but the frequency in which you decide to thoroughly clean the entire grill will depend on how often you use it and how susceptible it is to rust like we discussed earlier with the magnetic test. I will be doing a deep clean on this grill about once a month just to be sure to keep the rust away.

– Next we’ll apply the Weiman stainless steel polish which gives it an excellent protective coat and streak-free shine. We use this on our indoor appliances as well.
– You can pick up a 22oz bottle for under $7 on Amazon and it has great reviews
– Grab a clean microfiber cloth and apply directly to the rag to avoid overspray on glass or other areas you’ve already polished.
– Apply to the entire grill and be sure to get around the knobs and handles as rust can form just about anywhere.
– And now we’re done and the grill is looking great. This will help protect against oxidation and rust between cleanings and makes spills easier to clean up as well.
