I Got SCHOOLED by the Abilene Oil Man Turned Pitmaster

Check out the new Secondz® collapsible food storage solution from our friends at DripEZ! – and watch next!

Jay Stearns was an oil man. His father was an oil man. His grandfather was an oil man. But when the oil industry collapsed in 2014 it gave Jay the opportunity to pursue his true passion – BBQ. To say he’s a self-made man would be an understatement. He didn’t just make an amazing BBQ business – he made the smokers, the tables, even his first food truck by hand!

  1. So glad the algorithm sent me this video! I love the story telling about their lives and not just the bbq! I feel invested in their restaurant now having watched this. Thank you for sharing their story! I hope one day I can make a Texas bbq food crawl and end up in line there!

  2. Ate at Jays for years while stationed in Abilene. Only thing I miss about my time in the Air Force. About a week before I moved i reached out to them via Instagram and asked if they could do their brisket mac n cheese as the daily special one more time. Sure as hell they did it for me. Will never forget it and miss Jays. Thanks for all the good eats Jay!

  3. AL, on one of your videos you mentioned how hard it was to source skinless, boneless turkey breast and that you finally found a supplier (Restaurant Depot). My location said they can’t get them for me. Do you have a product number or supplier they get them from? Any help is much appreciated!

  4. Another great life story about a couple who went for it all and worked hard to make it work. That is what makes America great. There is so many layers to Jay's technic that I going to have to watch it many times to get it down. I made a similar cherry glaze for my twice smoked ham that Jay uses only mine has bourbon in it too. Abilene is really not to far from some of my trips into New Mexico that I need to tack on some extra days to hit Jay's BBQ joint. Likely try the ribs or the pig candy first.

  5. I live in Southwest Colorado and travel through that area all the time! I cannot wait to stop by and eat at your place Jay. You and your family seem like very humble and honest people! God bless y’all

  6. Great story! That Joe Allen’s that was featured in the beginning used to serve some of the best steaks in the world back in the 1990’s. Stumbled on to it in an industrial area of town while in Abilene for a kids soccer tournament back in the mid 1990’s and stopped to eat every time I passed through. Some time in the 2000’s they built a new restaurant and some where along the way the meat quality fell off a cliff. I heard they owned a cattle ranch and raised their own beef and had went through a divorce. Their steaks were literally world class and it was a sad thing to see it fall off! I will try Jays next time I travel to west Texas. Diana is a very beautiful lady and those two have worked hard to provide that great product to their community!

  7. Youtube has taught me to give up on the correct pronunciation of the W sauce. And thanks to this channel and the kind folks he visited, it is now wash your sister sauce. Now, on to the rest of the video. And I still love the channel and didn't know I would. Keep them coming as long as you can.

  8. …and again you nail it providing more than here’s how they make their Q. The personal side, history, passion and struggle to succeed is what’s makes this series deserving of an Emmy or some type of serious award! Mega! Huge Congrats!!!

Can’t wait for the next one!
