I like having both.
It all boils down to the variety of meals, the quality of meals, and the available time to prepare them. If you spend the rest of your life eating smoothies, then all you need is a blender. You may want to expand your meals to other dishes like CHICKEN PICATA, CHICKEN MARSALA, AVGOLEMONO SOUP, BUTTER CHICKEN, ROTERSERIE CHICKEN, PORK ROAST, SPAGHETTINI CARBONARA, SPAGETTI BOLOGNAISE, RIB ROAST, TOSSED SALID etc, etc etc. If you prefer a variety of high end quality meals, then you can either devote large amounts of time for the food prep work, or invest in equipment to shorten the prep work from hours to minutes. In the case of most people, including myself, if too much time is involved in preparing a meal, it is more convenient to go to a restaurant. Then your choice becomes inexpensive fast food crap or an expensive meal in a decent restaurant. After spending around $30,000.00 dollars a year eating in restaurants for several decades, I chose to invest in high end cooking equipment and eat at home. Test the ninja blender/food processor please
Have had a blender for 40 years, use it, but rarely. Have never owned a food processor, don’t see the need and am not happy with the way some food is treated in a food processor. And the argument for a stick blender just makes it an argument for 3 appliances. I actually use the stick blender more than the stationary one.
I like the immersion blenders a lot for big blending tasks in a dutch oven, but for small amounts of food like pasta sauces or purees, they are not ideal – a blender is a lot better. There are also some soups like a pure broccoli/water soup where you want a really even blend and it would not really be possible with an immersion blender. Immersion blenders are okay if you don't mind a bit of rustic texture in your soup – sometimes that's even desirable – but for small applications or very refined blends like that broccoli soup or a cherry tomato pasta sauce or a smooth carrot puree, the blender seems to be the way to go. If you were making cherry tomato pasta sauce for 10-20 people, an immersion blender could work, but not for 1-2 people – there's just not enough in the pan for it to work.

Any advice on the brain multiquick 9? It seems to answer needs of both food processor and blender for home use (not for volume). Thx.
I have a ninja blender that I mostly use with the single serve cups.
But I have more than one size Cuisinart.
To me Cuisinart is more important and the legacy Cuisinart models are great.
I don't do smoothies
Mostly just daiquiri.
I use a stick blender for milk shakes.
I really don't think you need a food processor for any recipe. but I do think some recopies need a blender or at least emersion blender.
I think the immersion blender is the all in one answer – the ones with a whisk, chopper and other attachments like Braun and KitchenAid can do it all — blend, chop, slice, grate, whip up stuff, it doesn’t take up a lot of space, and it’s fine if you cook for max like 2 or 3 people. So for a singleton like me, it’s the perfect choice. When I get hitched and get set up I’ll get the high end food processor, blender etc lol

We didn’t put a man on the moon
The technology already exists. I have one base unit, which came with a food processor jar, and, multiple jars for wet and dry grinding, plus an additional jar for juicing. So it surprises me that the US does not have the same products available.
When I was a kid we a Kitchen-Aid or Oster blender that came with a food processor attachment. I wasn't doing most the cooking back then, but it seemed like a great machine to me. Wonder if my mom still has that old thing.
