I hit Lidl to see how cheap I could make a proper double smash burger (bun, toppings, sauce) and cooked it on the Buffalo gas grill. Result: £2.26 per DOUBLE burger — crispy edges, melted cheese, loads of flavour. Full costings below, plus single/kids options and how many burgers it would take to “pay off” the grill.

GEAR I USE
In this video:
• Buffalo Gas Grill / Plancha:
• Deli/Prep Containers:
• Latex Gloves –

Other kit I regularly use:
• Handheld Thermometer:
• Wireless Thermometer:
• Wood Pellets:
• Cooler for Resting Meat:
• Kettle Rotisserie Ring:

HOW I COOKED IT
• Grill: Buffalo gas plancha — hot zone for smash, medium for toasting
• Patties: 2 × ~115 g balls, hard smash, season, flip once, cheese on
• Build: Toasted bun, shredded lettuce, onions, gherkins, house “smash sauce”

COST PER DOUBLE BURGER (LIDL SHOP)
• Mince (700 g packs): £1.76
• Cheese slice: £0.20
• Roll: £0.09
• Gherkins: £0.09
• Onions: £0.05
• Lettuce: £0.03
• Sauce (see breakdown): £0.04
TOTAL PER DOUBLE: £2.26

SAUCE BOTTLES → COST PER BURGER
• Mayo 500 ml: £0.47 per “sauce batch”
• French dressing 255 ml: £0.55 per batch
• Salsa 280 ml: £0.25 per batch
• American mustard 310 ml: £0.27 per batch
• Combined sauce cost ≈ £1.54 per big batch ≈ 40 burgers → ~£0.04 each

SINGLE & KIDS VERSIONS
• Single (one patty): £1.28
• Kids (single + sauce only): £1.11

WHAT I ACTUALLY COOKED
• 3 × Doubles = £6.78
• 1 × Single = £1.28
• 5 × Kids = £5.53
TOTAL COOK (9 burgers): £13.59

DOES IT “PAY FOR” THE GRILL?
• If you’d normally pay £10 for this burger
• Saving per homemade double = £10.00 − £2.26 = £7.74
• Grill cost used here = £184.74
• Burgers to cover the grill: 184.74 ÷ 7.74 ≈ 24

Prices are what I paid on the day at my local Lidl — yours may vary. If you beat £2.26, drop your shopping list and price in the comments and I’ll pin the best one
