White eggs, from leghorns, have thicker, less brittle shells, and are less likely to have bits of shell fall into the bowl. [And, I resent those dishonest Brown Egg Council commercials that claimed that brown eggs were local and, therefore, fresher. Where I live, both kinds of eggs travel about the same distance AND the (grading?) date is on the end of the carton. -The claim had something to do what where eggs came from in wintertime many decades ago.]

What you said makes no sense. The point of the counter method is that the membrane doesn't break but more of the shell breaks than with a sharp edge so all you need is to pull apart the membrane over the bowl.

I would use the back of a spoon. Same surface curve but less egg.
I use the inside surface of a bowl, I used to use a chopstick on a flat surface, while that creates the perfect width and depth of crack, I got tired of the mess.

If you just drop the egg from 6 inches or so from the counter, it'll break membrane.
I was taught to use a table knife – a moderate tap and if any gets in at all the shards are so small it doesn't really matter and it makes very short work of the membrane.
I use the flat side of a meat tenderizer. Hold the egg in one hand and tap it firmly against the mallet. Breaks cleanly every time.

So funny situation. I had a recipe where it called for 5 eggs and I used the egg to egg method. When I got to the last egg BOTH EGGS BROKE! The odds of this are very rare. I haven’t used this median in years.
