Traeger Grills use pellets as for fuel and if you’ve never started one up, it can be a bit intimidating. But after doing it a few times, it’s actually quite easy to do so follow along and I’ll show you how!
First open the main lid and check that there are enough pellets in the hopper. Refill the hopper if it looks kinda low. On the control panel, turn the knob to Smoke and then flip the power switch on. This turns on the fan motor and the auger starts feeding pellets into the firebox. After about 4 minutes, the grill starts smoking.
When you see a good amount of white smoke close the lid and set the knob to the desired temperature. At this point, leave the grill alone until it reaches the correct temperature roughly another 5 minutes. There’s a thermometer on the control panel so you can see how hot it’s getting.
The thing I like about the Traeger Grill is that the heat is kind of an indirect heat and you won’t get flare ups like on a gas grill. I’ve also found it’s not as easy to burn my food these days because there aren’t direct flames under the cooking surface. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m using hickory pellets but my meats come out with a reddish look after it’s done but it looks delicious! To shut down the grill, leave the lid open and turn the knob to Shut Down. The fan will continue to run for another 5 minutes then shut off. At that point, flip the power switch to Off.

Thank you!
Just the video I was looking for…
I bought this as my first propane grill. It's been a fun, learning experience https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxCx5fHawkK9OoV-ojFrY8JLnZrFwAmvUt . I think it's a bit too pricey after looking at other grills, but it wasn't hard to put together and it works really well. I love the side burner option for heating food during a power outage. I have an electric stove and live in the South (Hurricane season), so this was a bonus. I also bought a cover for it and it has protected it nicely (the Char Broil All-Season Grill Cover 3-4 Burner: Large). Every few grill sessions, I take the rack (or grate) and burner covers off and clean them with a non-abrasive scrubby and mild soap. I wipe the excess off of the bottom as well, taking care to avoid the gas and pilot lines.
Thank you!!!
I want to know how to increase the temperature after I've started it and find it needs more heat to cook faster. Mine is NOT the one on this video though.
Taking smoking advice from someone who’s not sure why their meat came out red is a bad idea…
After about 400 other videos, this was, not only the Best, but the only one I saw that showed us how to start the grill, and didn't take 10 or 15 minutes to "get right into it".
I really appreciate this video. I'm pretty sure, this is the one my friend used after I did the "seasoned start-up", and then she grilled burgers later.
Now, my question is, what ever happened with that fire box problem?
Do you still use your grill?
What light the pellets? Propane?
Great video, appreciate it.
😎..Thanks for the great tips 👍
Well done my man. Thank you for not wasting any of my time
Super helpful and straight to the point. No BS. Love it! Thank you.
Thank you I am a first time user if the Traeger Grill, I appreciate you making it simple and to the point,
Short sweet and to the point
Hello I’m looking to buy a pellet grill however I’m trying to figure out if they need plugged into an outlet because I do not have an outlet outside to plug anything in? I hope you can tell me how this works
is this smoker, electric,
do you plug in a power cable or what ?
Does this work for all traegers?
Thanks for the video! A lot of help
Very helpful
Thank you for showing how to operate. For forget people.
The instruction manual instructions were kinda vague after you get past the initial startup and burn off the oils from the factory. Thanks for your video it cleared a lot of things up!!!!
I spent over an hour researching and this was by far the best video thank you for your time
Very concise and great…thanks!
This was awesome and to the point. Successfully demystified the fire-up process. Thanks bud.
How is the Traegar pellet grill powered? Does it need to be connected to an electric outlet on the wall?
Easy instructions. Thank you.
The shortest, best, most concise description of how to start the grill, thank you!!
My new grill's instructions suggest that I should take everything apart and vacuum out all of the pellets and ash in the firebox either after it cools off, or before starting it again. Do you do that? I'd rather not have to do that every time I start the grill, I've used the grill once and now it's pretty greasy in there.
traeger grill is always the best;>>>t.co/LTEiLTBnY9 love the Copper color, really makes things nicer.
I’m having trouble firing it up just to smoke on minimal heat possible. Should be able to leave it on Smoke, right? But every time I walk away for 20-30 mins I find it shut down with what might be an error msg but not intelligible.
