  1. The hot glass method they showed where you fill a glass with hot water then, once the glass is warm, put an unwrapped stick of butter upright on a surface then dump the water out of the glass and place it upside-down over the butter stick and leave it for a few minutes actually does work shockingly well!

  2. When I'm cooking at home just for the family, I put the butter in a ziploc bag and put it on my cat's belly for 30 min. Works also for when eggs need to be room temp for meringues. The cat will cuddle the eggs and protect

  3. I slice it into quarter inch cubes, spread them out on a cutting board or a plate. By the time I have everything else ready to go it's soft. The increased surface area rapidly speeds up the softening

  4. I'm one of those people who can't abide leaving butter out. However, if I know I "want" to bake I'll plan ahead and leave it on the counter. But I've used that trick with good success in the past, pop it back in the freezer if I've over done it.

  5. Microwave 30secs @ 70% power for fridge cold butter. In 15 sec bursts for frozen.

My microwave is low wattage tho so if yours us more powerful, watch closely and probably reduce time a little.

Or I just grate the cold stick of butter into the recipe with a cheese grater and let it sit for a few minutes if it needs to be soft.
