Authentic Sweet And Sour Pork 咕噜肉 With Tomatoes. Better than Chinese Take-out recipe for a lot cheaper. The cherry tomatoes are from my garden to my cooking pan. A favourite Cantonese Recipe. The sauce is sweet, sour, tangy and salty. In the future, I’ll be doing videos on container gardening. Stay tuned.

Recipe is below:

SWEET AND SOUR PORK WITH GARDEN TOMATOES

16 oz. pork shoulder or pork butt
1 cup cherry tomatoes
3 tablespoons peanut oil (or other vegetable oil)
1 teaspoon ginger chopped
1 teraspoon garlic cloves smashed
1 onion sliced
3 tablespoons Chinese black vinegar (or use regular vinegar)
3 tablespoons brown sugar (or other kinds of sugar)
1 to 2 tablespoons ketchup
1 to 2 dashes sea salt (or other salt)
1 to 2 tablespoons light soy sauce (regular soy sauce)
1 tablespoon cornstarch + 1/4 cup water to make slurry
6 to 8 tablespoons cornstarch for deep frying

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS:

TO DEEP FRY PORK:

Cut pork shoulder or pork butt into one inch cubes. Coat the pork pieces in 6 to 8 tablespoons cornstarch. For less crispy coating, go half and half of the cornstarch with all purpose flour.

Put 2 to 3 cups cooking oil into a pot. Set temperature for oil at 350 F to 375 F (177 C to 190 C). Deep fry pork pork in small batches. Put deep fried pork on napkins to soak up excess oil. Set aside.

TO MAKE THE SAUCE:

Preheat a pan or wok at medium to high heat. Add cooking oil. Then add ginger and garlic. Stir fry briefly. Add onions and briefly sear. Add 3/4 to 1 cup water. Add 1 to 2 teaspoon beet powder or red fod colour to get the red in the soy sauce, Add ketchup, light soy saiuce and Chinese black vinegar. Thicken sauce with the cornstarch slurry solution. Add tomatoes and pork pieces. Mix all the ingredients together.

Serve this dish with rice or noodles- or both.
