  1. Self-cleaning is as close to a scam you can get. You have to clean the oven first, and the oven may or may not brick itself.
The oven rarely needs cleaning if you're treating it well, so paying for using a risky, expensive, wasteful and slow feature like that is far beyond unrecommendable. So far that if someone tries to sell sell that feature to you, you'll know they never used it.
If your usually cooking partner told you it's a great feature after buying a new stove, then it's just to make all of you feel better about the purchase.

  2. I've been using self clean mode in my ovens since summer 1974. I use all the safety precautions mentioned. 3 houses, 4 different ranges. hubby dropped an item, shattered glass cook top. cheaper to replace while range. these have all been free standing ranges. yes, I pre-wipe with damp paper towels, and thoroughly dry. I've had no problems ever. first ranges had a slide up panel covering glass window in door. I re-read directions every time. we try to be very careful with clean up and maintaining basic cleanup

  3. I was told to never use the self cleaning function. My oven has a steam cleaning function, you just remove the racks and divider (it's a dual oven), put about 400 ml of water into the basin, and it runs for about 20 minutes, then you just clean like normal. I've used it twice, works great and loosens most of the built-up gunk. It seems to be gentler on the system than creating an inferno inside your kitchen.

  4. My cat was so concerned about the self cleaning oven. I was working in the other room, and he kept coming in meowing. When I fished working, he meowed and led me to the basement where we stayed until the cleaning cycle was done. He was so intent on saving my life that day.

  5. I was told by the appliance repairman not to use the self cleaning cycles on my ovens. Or I would be calling him AGAIN. Using the self cleaning mode was how I ended up using only one oven for cooking Christmas dinner….thankfully I still had the one.

  6. "Never leave home while your oven is self cleaning." I was surprised to find all my co-workers think they can leave the house with the oven on regular bake. Some with gas ovens. I wouldn't leave with the toaster or microwave running, let alone the oven.

  7. My 4-year old Samsung double wall oven died after running the self clean cycle. Over the course of 1 month, they replaced the thermal cutoff switch and all the main circuit boards (there are 3 of them), but it ended up being the wiring harness replacement that ultimately fixed the issue. Oh, and the techs said never to run the self clean.

  8. The self clean "feature" is a great way to burn out the electronics in your stove. Found that out the hard way. Cremated the motherboard. A new motherboard cost as much as a new stove, so off it went to the dump. $1000 down the drain. Repairman said to never use the self clean on a stove with electronic controls, clean the oven the old fashioned way.
