Why does the feature exist if we are NOT supposed to use it? Are there still any manual clean ovens?
I leave the racks in and nothing has ever happened. Maybe they will warp one day. Still waiting for that to happen though. Maybe because I only do it once a year.
Self-cleaning is as close to a scam you can get. You have to clean the oven first, and the oven may or may not brick itself.
The oven rarely needs cleaning if you're treating it well, so paying for using a risky, expensive, wasteful and slow feature like that is far beyond unrecommendable. So far that if someone tries to sell sell that feature to you, you'll know they never used it.
If your usually cooking partner told you it's a great feature after buying a new stove, then it's just to make all of you feel better about the purchase.
Be careful, the front pane in my over broke into milion pices and sprinkled my whole kitchen. I am lucky noone was near the oven at that time
Pack pressure containers into the thing and enhance your ventilation fast
Best time to clean your oven is when ur not home so you don’t have to deal with the smoke when your house burns to the ground.
I tried the self cleaning once and my oven never opened again! Had to get a repair guy out to fix it and he recommended to never turn on self cleaning
Thank you!
I can confirm the "don't leave" comment. I came home to the fire department leaving my house carrying big fans. The neighbor called when he saw smoke coming out of my windows. Thankfully no damage.
I've been using self clean mode in my ovens since summer 1974. I use all the safety precautions mentioned. 3 houses, 4 different ranges. hubby dropped an item, shattered glass cook top. cheaper to replace while range. these have all been free standing ranges. yes, I pre-wipe with damp paper towels, and thoroughly dry. I've had no problems ever. first ranges had a slide up panel covering glass window in door. I re-read directions every time. we try to be very careful with clean up and maintaining basic cleanup
I was told to never use the self cleaning function. My oven has a steam cleaning function, you just remove the racks and divider (it's a dual oven), put about 400 ml of water into the basin, and it runs for about 20 minutes, then you just clean like normal. I've used it twice, works great and loosens most of the built-up gunk. It seems to be gentler on the system than creating an inferno inside your kitchen.
Definitely make sure to remove the racks. Made that mistake before and it cooked the chrome finish
My cat was so concerned about the self cleaning oven. I was working in the other room, and he kept coming in meowing. When I fished working, he meowed and led me to the basement where we stayed until the cleaning cycle was done. He was so intent on saving my life that day.
please add captions for the Deaf
Woweee, she's stunning!
I was told by the appliance repairman not to use the self cleaning cycles on my ovens. Or I would be calling him AGAIN. Using the self cleaning mode was how I ended up using only one oven for cooking Christmas dinner….thankfully I still had the one.
Could have used this about 20 hours ago. It stunk!!!
Not with my energy bills!
Very dangerous for pet birds, no matter how good your ventilation is.
I used to use the self-cleaning cycle in my gas stove, but after replacing 2 ignitors I finally figured out that was what was burning them out. No problems ever since.
"Never leave home while your oven is self cleaning." I was surprised to find all my co-workers think they can leave the house with the oven on regular bake. Some with gas ovens. I wouldn't leave with the toaster or microwave running, let alone the oven.
Dam those gas stores!
My 4-year old Samsung double wall oven died after running the self clean cycle. Over the course of 1 month, they replaced the thermal cutoff switch and all the main circuit boards (there are 3 of them), but it ended up being the wiring harness replacement that ultimately fixed the issue. Oh, and the techs said never to run the self clean.

I was told to never use an oven's self- cleaning cycle, because it can melt the cabinets that are next to it. It is also likely to damage some of the elements within the oven itself.
The self clean "feature" is a great way to burn out the electronics in your stove. Found that out the hard way. Cremated the motherboard. A new motherboard cost as much as a new stove, so off it went to the dump. $1000 down the drain. Repairman said to never use the self clean on a stove with electronic controls, clean the oven the old fashioned way.
What? I thought this is about self-cleaning dishwasher
